Founded
January 27, 1785, by the Georgia General Assembly; UGA is the first state-chartered university in America.

Athens, Georgia (Clarke County), about 60 miles northeast of downtown Atlanta.

The University of Georgia is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, masters, specialist and doctorate degrees. UGA's most recent capital campaign raised $653,647,368. By its close on June 31, 2008, over 102,000 donors had provided:

  • $82.3 million for student scholarships, awards and other support
  • $54.7 million for endowed professorships, chairs and faculty support
  • $174.3 million for academic and research program support
  • $51.9 million to help build the new learning environment
  • $151.8 million for the Georgia Bulldog Club’s support of varsity sport programs
  • $38 million to serve the state and nation with outreach programs
  • $84.9 million for general unrestricted support for the university and for schools, colleges and units
  • Millions more for other projects and needs
